Let there be light! Micro grid energy in Vinntysia

The Boulder–Vinnytsia Sister City partnership is actively exploring ways to support Vinnytsia’s energy security and long-term energy independence. In recent discussions, Vinnytsia representatives shared progress already underway, including local electricity generation, expanding solar installations, and plans to explore wind energy at several potential sites. The city is also considering a more integrated “smart grid” approach that could better manage power from solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and other sources—especially during winter blackouts and other emergency conditions.

Working with energy experts from Boulder and other partners, the Sister City team is helping frame a possible feasibility study focused on resilient micro-grids, battery storage, energy management systems, and the prioritization of critical facilities such as schools, municipal buildings, hospitals and other essential services. The team is also exploring possible funding pathways through U.S. government agencies, international banks, and innovative mechanisms such as carbon credits. Next steps include identifying technical counterparts in Vinnytsia, engaging municipal and national energy experts, and developing a practical roadmap for how the Boulder, and wider national & global experience with smart grids and clean-energy planning might support Vinnytsia’s urgent and future energy needs.
